I've heard that it's now possible to render three-dimensional images with computers (example below).

I don't have any immediate plans to do this, but it comes up occasionally, so this an official issue for 3d plots. If someone has a genius plan how Gadfly could be extended, feel free to fill me in.

How about adding something similar to the 3D plots that you have in the lattice package of R?
I have always missed this in ggplot2 so I end up using a mix of base plot, ggplot2 & lattice in R.

see also https://plot.ly There you can create interactive 3D plots with a ggplot2 like API.

Any updates on this ? I want to use gadfly for showing spacecraft simulations but the lack of 3d feature is big a issue... :(
Is this part of the future roadmap for Gadfly ?

Btw: I am looking for simple 3d point plots and not something as complex as shown in the picture above

It's definitely going to happen eventually, but I can't promise when.

@rohitvarkey has laid some major groundwork for this by generalizing the graphics system in Compose3D. There's still a pretty big project of generalizing what parts of Gadfly can be generalized and implementing 3D versions of what can't be generalized (and hopefully merging Compose3D into Compose).

Don't worry, the image was entirely facetious. 😁

Hi everyone -

Jack from Plotly here. Thanks for mentioning us @ssagaert

Plotly.js and its Julia client is not now 100% open-source under an MIT license:
https://plot.ly/javascript/open-source-announcement

Our 3d library is based on stack.gl and has all the functionality of matplotlib or MATLAB:
https://plot.ly/python/#3d-charts

How can we help out with this? I created an issue for a broader Gadfly > Plotly figure converter effort here:
#764

Would love to help bring 3D to the party if we can.
