I'm working on the SSL issue. Here's the status:

  • Lost power in an electrical storm in February
  • System would not boot
  • Apparently, the OS (Ubuntu 20.04) had upgraded itself into an unusable state that was not detected until the power outage.
  • After spending a day attempting to repair, I gave up and decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 jammy
  • This required solving half-a-dozen crazy problems over the next few days.
  • However, gnucash.org requires PHP 7.4 and the latest Ubuntu only has PHP 8.1 -- there's a string of PHP errors. (I'll try to report these later, when my hair is not on fire.)
  • So I downgraded back to 20.04 and got back a working website.
  • The downgrade somehow wrecked the SSL cert management. I'm working on this now.
  • It involves decoding an assortment of cryptic error messages and scouring stackexchange to find possible solutions. So far, no luck.
  • Also, its rate-limited: you're only allowed to retry 5 times every few hours, so twiddle your thumbs and wait until the next window opens up, and then try again.

I'm stumped. Here's the bug report:

OMG. Within minutes of creating the issue https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/invalid-response/195174 the fix arrived. GnuCash https now works. There's an assortment of other issues, including stuff like this:

PHP Notice:  Trying to access array offset on value of type null in /home/gnucash/www/gnucash-website-master/externals/header.phtml on line 25

but I will pursue these through email and/or issues here. (would you prefer github issues, or emails?)
