We got some feedback from engineering that we can do a better job highlighting what's new and changed in the docs.

image

That includes:

  • making use of above navigation badges
  • calling out newness/changes at the top of the docs
  • preferring new content at the top vs old (js profiling content before flame chart, erg)

But it's always important to make people consider the docs fresh and not stale. So let's do that not just with updated imagery, but with more explicit callouts to what is new.

Any suggestions come to mind?

  • One item that @dr4b noted is that the new pillar page of d.c.com will give us the ability to sort and badge items how we want, and we can call out new items there.

To highlight stuff like that means keeping things updated and decide how long do we highlight new stuff for etc.

Aggregating the content somehow would be good, if we can come up with a way to do something like that.

We'll probably want to wait until d.c.com's new design lands (afaik, that's happening super soon) so that we're using any new callout styles/badges that are available.

There are a bunch of items in http://updates.html5rocks.com/2013/12/DevTools-Digest-December-2013 that we might want to call out:

  • Console's copy() works for objects
  • Easily remove event listeners
  • Copy image as data URL
  • Regex filter for console
  • Removal of CSS warnings
  • Image resize event details (maybe captured in Timeline updates)
  • Rendering settings available in the drawer
  • DevTools themes now available through extensions

We are also planning on having a dynamic home page where feature articles
should (and will be!) updated on a regular basis. We can put in a proper
rotation to make sure the content stays fresh until we have RSS feeds doing
the job for us.
