The current benchmarking infrastructure is very much a hack, and should be deprecated in favor of cargo bench once the associated functionality lands in Stable Rust.

I think criterion has nicely evolved over the past few years, to the point where it should now be usable for this purpose. Will try.

Yup, criterion is now good enough for this. Switched to it on master!
