In 2009 Sebastian Madgwick developed an IMU and AHRS sensor fusion algorithm as part of his Ph.D research at the University of Bristol. For further detail visit x-io Technologies. For a first attempt only IMU (Gyro + Acc) might be enough. In a second step AHRS (Gyro + Acc + Mag) could be used.
