In a tweet, that utilizes ow.ly, a URL shorten tool for Twitter, the shortened URL contained a period at the end ("https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/3ie."), which results in a strange view of the dataverse page with a validation error.

This appears to be cause by an incorrect URL mapping by the user where they might have added a . at the end of the url. This also could happen when people forward URLs in email and end the sentence with . that then becomes part of the URL.

Two options:

  1. Send it to a 404 page (incorrect url rather than this error)
  2. Strip out the . from the URL since it is potentially a common user error and if it doesn't match the resulting alias you can still show a 404 ;)

I just confirmed that https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/3ie. as of v. 4.6.1 build 69-1ed82ae still shows "Validation Error".

Closing this issue as a duplicate of Error message for wrong/missing dataverse is not clear #4196. In that, it was decided to return the correct 404 error code.
