'Hard' remove a material from a project

I'm trying to delete the 2"X2" BRUSHED ALUM. TOP RAIL AND POST from the following project, but I can't find the last (1) object that it's tied to, so I can ultimately delete the material.

As a related feature request, would it be possible to 'hard' remove a material?

That is, be able to remove a material even though it might be attached to other 'things' in the file.

Perhaps, it could just be exchanged with a default material.
