This is different than the FAQ in that it focusses on common issues and bugs and how to fix them.
Based on things that have come up in the #help and #help2 channels on Discord.

Things that I have already written down a few months ago (unfinished):

The game doesn't ask for a server IP address.

If this is the first time starting the game with the mod it should always ask you for a server IP address.
Otherwise the game is not at version 1.0.0 or you installed the mod incorrectly.

The game only ask for the server IP address on startup once. After entering it you have to change the server IP in another way.

The mod controls are not working.

Sometimes the control combinations are a bit flaky and don't always work immediately.

  • Try the combinations multiple times.
  • Hold down the shoulder buttons first before pressing the other buttons.
  • In the main or pause menu select something neutral like the Options before pressing the combination.

If the <a-int>game did not ask for a server IP address</a-int> before, the mod isn't working and its controls will not work.

I do not see other players.

Ways to possibly fix not seeing others:

  • Reload the stage (going in & out of a subarea, warping or dying in-game).
  • Restart the server while all games & emulators are closed.
  • Or if that's not possible (public server): create new user profiles to get a new profile ID.
  • Enable scenario merging on the server.
  • If there are repeating Disconnecting already connected client errors in the server log, then you both have to create a new user profile.
  • Make sure to use the latest dev build of the mod from GitHub ( https://github.com/CraftyBoss/SuperMarioOdysseyOnline/releases/tag/latest-dev, bottom is newest).
  • If there is a reconnect button, then update to the latest dev build.

Things to look out for:

  • Debug menu shows your own connection status as: Client Socket Connection Status: Socket Connected
  • Debug menu shows the other players' connection status as: Connection Status: Online
  • Debug menu shows the same stage and isn't empty.
  • Debug menu shows the same scenario number that isn't -1 or 255.

I'm on Mac with Ryujinx and the game is always Connecting to Server

If you are playing with Ryujinx on a Mac and face connection issues (Connecting to Server always showing and Client Socket Connection Status: Socket Connected in the debug menu), then please try out version 1.3.0 of the mod instead of the latest 1.4.0 version. Follow the instructions for Ryujinx but download the SMO_Online_v1.3.0_for_yuzu.zip file and not the one for Ryujinx.
