How to Enable Jump List for PathfinderJSON

The "jump list" is a feature new to Windows 7 and present in all versions since then. When enabled in a program, the user is able to right-click on the program's icon in the taskbar or the Start menu and access quick commands or recently-opened files right there, without needing to open the program itself.

PathfinderJSON 1.2 adds in support for the jump list, and will display your recently-opened sheets. Clicking on a sheet will open a new window with that sheet open. However, due to how Windows designed the feature and due to PathfinderJSON not including an installer to set it up properly, it won't work right away when you download PathfinderJSON. Instead, you can follow the steps below to enable the jump list for your copy of PathfinderJSON:

  1. In Windows Explorer, find a folder where you have at least one of your character sheet files. Doesn't matter which file.

Folder with character sheet files

  1. Right-click on one of your character sheets (again, doesn't really matter). Select "Open with" and then select "Choose another app".

Right-click a file and select "open with > choose another app"

  1. In the window that appears, make sure the "Always use this app to open .json files" is not checked. Select "More apps", scroll down to the bottom of the expanded list, and select "Look for another app on this PC".

Uncheck the box, select "more apps", then select "look for another app"

  1. Another window will appear, asking you to find the program you want to use. Navigate to where you've downloaded PathfinderJSON and select it.

At this point, you're done! PathfinderJSON will open up with the file you've selected, but you can close it. In the future, when you open PathfinderJSON you should also be able to see your recent files in the jump list there as well, when you right-click the app icon in the taskbar!

Note that this will only apply to the PathfinderJSON copy in that specific place that you selected in step 4. If you download another copy of PathfinderJSON and put it somewhere else, the jump list won't appear for that copy (I'd recommend against following the steps again when you download another copy, as then you'll start getting multiple PathfinderJSON entries in Windows Explorer and it'll be confusing). Instead, when you want to download another copy, download it and then copy it over the existing one you have (the one in step 4). The jump list will stay there then. 😄
