Context

Display selected channels on the homepage feed dedicated to selected projects

Scope

Design

We need a section which shows a selection of channels 4 /5 which is featured and displayed on Homepage

Suggestion from Bedeho:

For this we would need some sort of robust template that would feature the creator, their channel and perhaps the latest video in their channel. The objective is to allow creators to capture traffic for their most valuable recent messages. If the banner is fully automatic, then it would be ideal if it could pick up some of the key brand colors of the creator avatar or brand banner to accent the key colors in the header. Spotify does this really well for example for its backgrounds on playback.

Dev

  • Create new component for featured project
  • Add ability to feature this project in a selected category
  • Add ability to define which ordinal place from the top (e.g. relevance position) the featured project card will be shown (e.g. if we want to feature 4 projects on the very top of the 4 video grid page, the position will be 1,2,3,4. If we want it blended into the video feed we can choose 10, 20, 30 and thereby showing as every 10th card).

Thank you for the nice start!

Second one looks better on the low fi level imo. I would like to see it as a carousel tho that users can slide horisontally when on mobile or click through from desktop. We can have more than one sections like that.

In general can we think of how this looks on mobile before we expand this to desktop - mobile first approach should guide us! :)

@dmtrjsg Hey I've designed the section in high fidelity on mobile. Let me know wdyt!

Well done @msmadeline

Was this version done fore the XS and S? How would this look like on iPhone13 for instance or some of the later Android smartphones?

I would like to see how the carousel would look like if we show more of the second project peeking from the screen, perhaps by reducing the channel card width and making the button "view channel" to "View".

Also ineterested to see a variation where the background of such section is slightly at contrast, in case we want to add more of the featured projects widgets down the page, not just at the very top this would help.

  • I highly encourage yo to try to look at how this will actually look with real cover art from real creators, using these glossy illustrations with consistent branding is not a good idea, it gives a false impression of how robust the designs are to real user generated content.
  • What assets are going to be used here? If you just use channel cover photos that people actually have, will the aspect ratio and clipping just make this nonsensical in a very large % of cases, even for good channels? Probably worth checking. Are you going to use custom art for each creator?
  • I think featuring 5-6 creators, it may diminish the value of being featured, and also frankly the engagement rate from viewers who likely will discount the signal when there are so many. I think one single creator per.
  • No one is going to follow from just seeing someone being featured, this interaction just wastes space despite not being useful. Why not just make the whole card clickable, no need to have a view button either.
  • Is going to a channel a sensible CTA? as a user I want to just see a representative great video right a way, I don't want to go to a channel, that's a research chore. Likewise as a creator, I probably want to have a distinct message to funnel people to, e.g. a recent update or something, not just my channel.

@bedeho Thanks for the valuable feedback!

  • Your're right - will do exactly that

What assets are going to be used here?

  • I'm gonna use the blured featured video's thumbnail as the background because If I would've used the channel's avatar image or channel cover photos - the colors of it and the color of the video that we display are gonna clash

Why not just make the whole card clickable, no need to have a view button either.

  • Sure. thats a good point. But maybe we can leave the "follow" button as well? wdyt?

Is going to a channel a sensible CTA? as a user I want to just see a representative great video right a way,

  • Yeah, we can just skip the "view channel" button, but as for the video - we already display the most recent/most popular video at the top of the card which even after hovering/putting finger on the card can be automatically played

And also as for the recent update etc. Do channels have information like that? And even If we would do that we then would have to design a flow from the creator's perspective to add such a message for their featured channel's card bio

I don't buy it, no one will click that, so it will just waste attentino and space.

we already display the most recent/most popular video at the top of the card which even after hovering/putting finger on the card can be automatically played

But the featured videos are not the same as the featured creator, is it? I dont think they are in general the same.

And also as for the recent update etc.

I just mean that they just ahve more specific information in a video, for example pertaining to recent news or campaigns.

I would say that we need "Featured" as a bubble tag rather than section header as well as add more contrast to the background so it stands out more.

I would like to see how this would look like if we have several of them presented on mobile and desktop feeds (let's say every 10th).

Can I just ask , why does it say "Featured project" ? Most creators in most categories are not really projects? even in crypto they may not be projects per say, many creators may be independent.

If its not meant to say featured project, what is it meant to say in all tehse idfferent cases? is it a custom label per creator, or per category?

This seems like overkill right now, and adds complexity on server sdie, just putting the N featured at top is perfectly fine, really simplifies query.
