Trivia

Trivia web application is a trivia game running on the web. Students are asked questions about interesting but unimportant subjects. Students can take questions from a certain category or from all category play the trivia game.

Code style follows the PEP8 style guide

Quick installation

Install docker and docker-compose

Clone the repository to your local machine with git clone https://github.com/kimbohlovette/Trivia.git

Execute the command cd Trivia to move to the project directory.

Run docker-compose up to start all trivia application services (database service, api service and the web service).

The frontend will serve locally on port 3000 and the backend is available locally on port 8080.

Setting up each services individually without docker.

Prerequisites

  • Nodejs - Install nodejs to run the React frontend library and npm ( a package manager for nodejs applications)

  • Python3 - Install python3 to run backend code. Python3.7 and above is recommended ( and pip or pip3 a package manager for installing python libraries)

Installations

Backend

In order to install backend dependencies and run the server, do the following

  • Run move into the backend directory by running the cd backend provided you are in the Trivia directory

  • Create a virtual environment for your backend project by running the following command

    python3 -m venv venv

  • Activate the virtual environment by running

    source venv/bin/activate

  • Run pip3 install -r requirements.txt to install all dependencies for the backend.

  • In order to setup the postgresql database in your system,

    1. sudo -u postgres -i to login into postgresql environment. (you will be asked to enter credendials for your computer)

    2. dropdb trivia & createdb trivia to create the trivia database.

    3. psql trivia to login into the psql terminal with the trivia database

    4. In the postgres database terminal, run the command

      \i ./tivia.psql to setup database tables and populate the tables with data.

  • Start the backend server by running FLASK_APP=flaskr FLASK_DEBUG=1 flask run

  • In order to run backend tests,

    • Install flask-unittest flask unit test library using the command pip install flask-unittest
    • Run python3 -m test_flaskr --verbose

If the backend test runs successfully then you are good to go.

Frontend

  • Move into the frontend directory

  • Run npm install to install frontend dependencies (This command should be run only once)

  • Start the frontend server by running npm start

Getting started with Trivia API

The trivia API exposes some endpoints for manipulating and querying the trivia database. The base URL is

http://localhost:5000

Errors

  • 200 - Success
  • 404 - Resource not found error
  • 422 - Bad request
  • 405 - Method not allowed

Endpoints

  • Endpoint to get all categories as a dictionary object all keys being the category id's and values the category types.

  • Request data: No data or parameters required

  • Request aguments: No data or parameters required

  • Returns: An object with a single key, categories, that contains an object of id: category_string key:value pairs.

  • Searches the database for questions that match search key

  • Sends a request to create a new question

  • Deletes the question with the id id.
