The project we build is about the ever growing number of security surveillance cameras located in the city of Paris. There are more than one thousands two hundred of them.

We think it raises concern about privacy and the limit between public and private life.

A few months ago, the online magazine owni.fr released a .kml file of all the coords of the cameras.

Using Google maps API and this file, we built a web app that can simulate the casual walking of any citizen from one point to another. It will display each camera on the map, as well as an approximate radius of the area it covers. The user position marker will be updated over time to simulate it following its path.

We then keep track of the total distance and time of your travel, and split it into public time and private time. The stats are updated on each step at the bottom of the screen.

You can see that a casual walk here between home and work goes through very dense camera areas.

We hope the app can allow anyone to easily understand in a fun way what more than one thousand cams in Paris means, and how it affects their everyday walks.

A few words on technology : this is simple html5, js, css, geolocation and a .kml file. It also works on smartphone and geolocation-enabled devices, in that case instead of simulating a path, it simply follow the user in real time.
