Requirements

  • This is a feature request and not a bug report. Otherwise, please create a new bug report instead.
  • Please check to see if this request (or a similar one) already exists.
  • It's a single feature. Please don't request multiple features in one issue.

Describe the feature you'd like

Tell the user they can't do cross-instance searches when not logged in, or put a link to that instance to avoid federating.

If I click this link while logged in then it works, but if I click it while not logged in then it just says no results

This is pretty confusing, I understand it probably reduces spam and server load, but there could be some clearer messaging to tell the user what's happening. It could even give a link to what you searched for just by rewriting your input to point to that instance directly instead of federating. (But also maybe communities that are already federated should show up anyways?)

I thought my instance was setup incorrectly, I even did a downgrade and backup restore to try to fix it!

(Not sure if this should be classified as a bug or a feature request)
