Although still actively maintained, this list is now a few years old. As such, it needs a refresh to ensure that everything listed here aligns with the goal of providing users more choices for privacy-respecting software and services.
I'm opening this ticket to track progress. There's quite a lot of work to get done here, so any help in undertaking this would be very much appreciated :)
This task involves the following:
Removal of tools that:
Are not awesome
Are not directly related to privacy OR or not a more private alternative to mainstream/ big-tech providers
Are no longer maintained, or have not been updated in a while (2 year cut off)
Are not fully open source and correctly licensed (except for a very small number of exceptions)
Have any potential security issues (as lack of security immediately jeopardies privacy)
Edit entries that:
Read like an advert - we're not trying to persuade anyone or sell anything
Include opinions (like best or easiest) - should be objective
Contain excess fluff - should be to-the-point
Have poor or incorrect grammar or spelling
Addition of tools that:
Are awesome, respect privacy, and help users escape big tech / non-privacy-respecting service
Fit in newer categories (such as AI, Web3, Development, etc)
Replace older/obsolete tools, such as forks for dead projects that include active security patching
Improvements:
Shorten descriptions, to make it easier for users to find what they're looking for
Consider removing the table layout, and using just bullet points, to conform to sindresorhus/awesome's guidelines
Consider reformatting everything, in a way that pleases sindresorhus/awesome's linter
Consider removal of Bonus sections, as these don't directly align to the projects mission statement
Consider removal of Notable Mentions sections, as too as if something isn't good + relevant enough to make it into the main section, does it really add value to the user?
Come up with a succinct, to-the-point, impactful mission statement, so that it's easier to confirm if entries conform to the aim of the repo
Website
The website (awesome-privacy.xyz) also needs a refresh, this should be a reasonably quick and easy task (in comparison to the above!). It should meet accessibility standards, should work on more niche browsers, shouldn't need JS enabled to run, refreshed UI, improved search, and dark mode!
Notes
The point of this repository, is to make it easier for users to find privacy-respecting alternatives to common software and services. Anything that doesn't align to that makes it harder for readers to find what they're looking for, and as such should not be included.
Association Disclosure
This doesn't specifically relate to any projects I'm associated with, but it could do indirectly since it targets so many entries on the list. When it comes to making the changes, I shall be sure to properly declare any affiliation I have with those services as transparently as possible (as always!).
