Why the (licit) name?

Curious about the name Licit?

Licit definition: Licit things are allowed or legal – authorized, sanctioned by, or in accordance with law. Licit applies to a strict conformity to the provisions of the law and applies especially to what is regulated by law. Ex: the licit use of drugs by doctors.

We use the editor for (typically) very complex documents such as technical manuals; training manuals; techniques, tactics, and procedures; proposals, etc. These documents can be hundreds of pages in length. They have a controlled structure that must be enforced through various QA processes.

In may situations today, users accomplish this through email “workflows”, Excel tracking spreadsheets, etc. – horribly inefficient. So, we provide an editor that helps enforce the “rules”, keeps authors “legal” (especially if there are rules and regulations required within their documents), and we support fine-grained control of workflow activation and management while they are in the editing session.

Thus, the overarching concepts are “follow the rules”, “stay out of trouble”, and “make it easy to manage compliance” while having a nice editor that makes it seem natural to accomplish those concepts (i.e., it helps versus gets in their way).
