Did you ever make a fix for this, or does this issue still need to remain open?

No, it needs to stay open. I'm not sure what core users as a test for a IPv6 reserved username, we should copy that.

I've given that one to you. You can use test.wikipedia.org to test out changes to the function of Peachy.

Apparently they use a helper function in /includes/utils/IP.php -- not sure if the main function there, or the "public" checks as well. No time to look at it now, alas.
