Frequently Asked Questions

I can't see the latest update for Emby for Kodi?

Try this first.
Kodi add-ons > open the sidebar > Check for updates. I don't recommend updating straight from the add-on's information dialog, it is not reliable.

If it fails.
Ensure you are on the latest version of the Emby repository (stable or beta). Repeat the step above.

When Kodi starts, I do not see the latest content updates?

Make sure you have the Kodi companion server plugin installed. If not, you can update the libraries via opening or launching Emby for Kodi > Manage libraries > Update libraries.

I upgraded from Krypton to Leia and now playback doesn't work?

There was a change to the path system for add-on playback mode in Leia. Please reset your local database and playback will work again.

Enable the web server to cache artwork. What does it mean?

Under Kodi settings > service > control > Allow remote control via HTTP > Enable. You may need to switch the port to a random one to enable the web server.

Native playback mode, steps to locate files.

Try this first.

Under Kodi settings > file manager > Add source > Browse > Add network location.
The server name should reflect what is in Emby. Restart Kodi.

Locate the server name with your Emby libraries paths
The server name is SERVERNAME or the IP address.

\\SERVERNAME\PATH\TO\
\\192.168.0.100\PATH\TO\

Troubleshoot using Add-on playback mode.

With add-on playback mode, playback works out of the box. Emby can provide the file to Kodi, working around path issues.

  1. Reset your local database.
  2. Select add-on playback during the setup.
  3. Optional: Troubleshoot true direct play, in the add-on settings > playback > Disable Force HTTP.

Since the path is retrieved right before playback starts, you can try different things to achieve direct play without needing to reset your database.

Once you find a working solution to achieve true direct play (look at the Kodi logs to confirm), you can switch back to native playback mode (reset your local database again) and Kodi should be able to locate your files.

Tips that can help.

  • Server name or IP address
Using the IP address is preferred. Name resolution is not always supported. Modify the optional network path in Emby.
