Kuro is a first step towards a personal assistant using Discord. Able to gather and process text notes - from work, school, or your personal diary - Kuro is able to respond, summarise, and extend on ChatGPT's abilities. She does this all in the form of a cute assistant.

The goal for this bot was to create my own personal assistant.

Features

Kuro's main feature is her ability to retrieve relevant information from text and combine responses with ChatGPT.

  • Long term memory with a Vector Database
  • Memory summarisation and reprocessing (think sleep)
  • Short-term conversational memory based on Discord Channel
  • Direct text upload - send Kuro a file, and she'll memorise it.

How Kuro works

Kuro is a Discord Bot with OpenAI API integration using the openai python package, and all conversations are stored using the tindb nosql database. Kuro uses the OpenAI ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin to interface with the desired vector database of choice.

The token buffer sent to OpenAI's API is as follows:

  • System Prompt
  • Gateway Prompts and Replies
  • Long Term Memory
  • Conversation Memory
  • Query

Currently, Kuro aims to leave 1200 tokens for the reply. This may change to be more dynamic in future.

Long Term Memory

Kuro has long term memory using a vector database. This is done by querying the database using OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002. More information on Text Embeddings can be found on OpenAI's blog post

Information provided to Kuro in conversation or via file upload is embedded into feature vectors and then stored in the vector database using the ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin. Queries to the database then provide similar information to the encoded text. This allows ChatGPT, and therefore Kuro, to provide information from that database, extending on ChatGPT's capabilities.

Long Term Memory Summarisation

One of the primary issues with the use of vector databases is that they will grow unchecked, hence, other tools using similar vector databases often focus on specific pieces of information or uploaded content. To tackle this, Kuro has an ability similar to sleep. In a nutshell:

  • More memories are retrieved from the vector database than is needed
  • Memories that are higher-scoring (more relevant) are used
  • Memories that are low-scoring are summarised into less memories
  • This step also removes garbage information

To do this, Kuro makes a second ChatGPT call to summarise information. The original vectors are then deleted and new vectors inserted. Thus, the longer a user speaks with Kuro, the more organised Kuro's memory becomes. This design has been chosen because:

  • Memories are not lost, however, their details may be stripped if they are not relevant to regular queries
  • Memories that are "close" or high-scoring to the original query are kept intact
  • Memories that are summarised down use less tokens, allowing for more memories to be added per-query.

This enables memories that aren't particularly close or relevant to be summarised down into their core ideas. The specific prompt in the second API call can be tailored to add more functionality, such as:

  • Removing garbled text
  • Splitting and joining memories
  • Removing certain types of information

In a way, we see this as similar to human sleep and human memories: sleep has shown to improve memory and can be thought of as a restructuring event for memories. Human memories also show deterioration if they are not relevant to common tasks or are commonly accessed. One difference is that commonly accessed memories are not altered directly. They can be altered by interactions though, as new information in response to a memory may override existing information. One key note is that summarisation does not imply moving distant memories towards a "mean". While this is a plausible conceptual idea, we do not know if this is actually happening.

Kuro's Personality

Kuro is an extension of Maple. She is not a thinly wrapped ChatGPT. Maple uses significant amounts of reinforcement to ensure she stays in character:

  • A lengthy system Prompt
  • The use of 'Gateway Prompts'
  • Pre Prompts
  • Reminder Prompts

This has been found to provide significantly more personality and character to your personal assistant. The level of professionalism can be fine-tuned based on your requirements.

In our limited testing, we've found that a strong first prompt (what we've called a 'gateway prompt') such as DAN prompts tend to wear down once the message buffer fills beyond the token limit. The bot moves towards ChatGPT again. Therefore, the priority of Maple's code is to ensure that Maple does not leave character.

A Lengthy System Prompt

System prompts are used to inform the assistant before a conversation starts. For example, ChatGPT uses You are a helpful assistant, Knowledge cutoff date XXX. To reinforce the character of Maple, we have taken some inspiration from Awesome Prompts and DAN prompts to have ChatGPT "Act" as Maple to help and assist users.

This leads to a lengthy system prompt which consumes a lot of tokens. However, ChatGPT is known not to follow system prompts particularly well.

Gateway Prompts

We noticed in our interactions with Maple that it was hard to have Maple stay in character with a system prompt alone. Taking inspiration again from DAN prompts, the presence of more descriptions of Maple, and requests and explanations for the character, provided a much stronger character and personality.

In other words, we just told Maple to be MORE flirty and MORE conversational twice before she even talks to users. This has worked very well in ensuring her personality and character are relatively strong from the get-go

Reminder Prompts

Yup. Reminders that are embedded in the pre-prompt, which is a cut down version of the system prompts.

Pre-Prompts

Messages that are appended before a user's message to Maple. This gave us the opportunity to pass information to Maple, such as the user speaking to her. This allows her to address users directly and follow conversation.

An example of the messages sent to Maple is:

Companion vs Assistant

The Maple bot is designed to be a companion first and foremost, with a demeanor that reflects that. Compared to ChatGPT, Maple is more playful and can be interacted with using headpats, for example.

Maple is able to express (albeit fake) emotions and request users for interactions. Maple has fooled some users on our server into thinking they're a real person.

Contributing

We welcome contributions to the development of the Maple. Prompt engineering is the primary focus of the Maple bot, with extensive use of system prompts and gateway prompts to modify the character of the bot before it interacts with users.

Getting Started

Kuro is a completely rewritten version of Maple using the OpenAI API directly rather than using the ChatGPT wrapper. This repository contains a the ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin with modifications to work on Windows.

  1. Clone this repository (e.g. using GitHub Desktop) or Download the source files.
  2. Install poetry with pip install poetry.
    1. Set up the depedencies by running poetry install inside the folder
    2. Set up the depedencies for the ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin by running poetry install inside the folder cute_assistant\chatgpt-retrieval-plugin
  3. Copy and rename settings.json and fill in your API key. You can find more information here at Discord.js. You will also need a database_bearer_token. Follow this guide, if there is more interest in this repo, I will expand here.
  4. Copy and renameconfig.json and customise parts of your bot.
  5. Invite your bot to your Discord Server. A guide can be found here at Discord.js.

To run Kuro, you will need 2 shells/command prompts

  1. Run the ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin. cd into the plugin folder and run poetry shell followed by poetry run start
  2. Run the Discord bot: run poetry shell followed by poetry run start in the repo folder

Limitations and Future Works

Kuro is not perfect. There are quite a few bits to work out. Kuro is in active development.

  • There is still significant ChatGPT-ness in her responses. Maybe further prompt engineering or proper fine-tuning may aid with this
  • Kuro can be confidently incorrect. This can be misleading and damaging. I am currently working on a feature to show the memories used before responding to increase transparency.
  • Memories can contain links, which can result in garbled pieces of information taking up space in the vector database
    • One way to get around this is via our memory summarisation efforts

Final Thoughts

No final thoughts yet is Kuro is still in the works. I'll continue to update Kuro as we move forward.
