I used to have the same problem the first time I installed it. But after closing my terminal and opening a new session the problem was gone, I have a week with this plugin and I haven't see this issue again.
OS: Fedora 25
Vimshell: 8.0.238

I seem to be dealing with the same issue. Closed my terminal application, restarted, opened vim and nvim again. Still same issue.

OS: OSX Sierra
Vim: 8
Nvim: brew build 2016-03-28

Figured it out, OSX does not give support from dbus, one can install dbus using brew, but then the Spotify items will be missing, since spotify is not shipped with dBus support in OSX

I just created a fork that changes the dBus message with OSX-script.
Feel free to take it and include it with your own.
https://github.com/HendrikPetertje/vimify would be my take

ps:
Your plugin is really cool, if everything works it's basically going to be a must-have in my Neovim

Updated my plugin to work with the new spotify auth rules. Please check the instructions in the readme over at https://github.com/HendrikPetertje/vimify to get started :)
