It would be good to be more strict with the config. Will need restructuring - eg. scoped for modules, templates, custom attributes etc. Would then allow stricter validation and errors in case of unexpected keys (eg. typos) via JSON Schema validation.

Ties into / depends on #1892

This is a major breaking change, so should be v2.
