Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: My Mac says WAIL can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

A: This is due to the way WAIL is currently distributed (direct download instead of through the App Store). To allow WAIL to run on your system, follow this procedure, which only needs to be completed on first run:

  1. Go to  > System Preferences...
  2. Click on "Security and Privacy"
  3. Select the "Open Anyway" button.
  4. Enter your user password to save the setting.

Q: When I click to show the Heritrix web UI, my browser shows me a warning.

A: This is normal and it is safe to add the exception. For more information on this please consult this section of the Heritrix documentation.

Q: When I open the Heritrix web UI using Safari I am prompted to login in.

A: WAIL can not automatically log in for a user who is using Safari as the default browser. WAIL sets the username to lorem and the password to ipsum. Using these credentials will let you access the web UI. For more information please consult this section of the Heritrix documentation.

Q: When I click on the "View in Wayback" button in WAIL, my browser shows the message "Resource Index Not Available Exception. The Resource Index required to satisfy this request is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." What does this mean? Why isn't my archive available?

A: WAIL is showing the Wayback interface for a URI that has no mementos yet. In this case, I started a crawl of a URI then hit the button before the crawl finished and the WARC indexed.
