Not sure if this is something that I want to do. Steam's API is known to be spotty, and DailyDota2 takes care of a lot of that hassle for me. The upside of using Steam's API directly is that I can get a lot more interesting information, such as team lineups, live stats, etc.

The other alternative is of course to get access to DailyDota2's private API, but that may or may not be possible.
