Please try https://mail.protonmail.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=%s

Thanks for your speedy reply!

I created an entry using your link. The result is the following: Clicking on a mailto-Link I get redirected to ProtonMail (where I have to login even though I'm logged in in another tab) – videlicet to my inbox, not to the compose-button having lost the recipient-address :(

Maybe it'll work in the future …

My pleasure @retoter

Please try emailing their support team with this email template:

Hi Support Team,
I was looking for the "Wildcard Compose URL" for your webmail service. For example Hotmail wildcard url is: "https://mail.live.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=%s", where the "%s" is where the clicked on email address gets populated. For instance when I click on a mail link of "mailto:blah@hotmail.com" it should navigate to "https://mail.live.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=mailto:blah@hotmail.com".

Other webmail services like Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and AOL Mail provide these wildcard URLs, can you please share with me a wildcard url that will work with your webmail service?

I'll be making a webext version. I need the communities help to reach out to the services they want support for. I'll build the extension but please help me get in touch with ProtonMail etc to get their link. Please share with us once you do.

It is very tough to develop and also deal with 3rd party services. So please help me community so I can focus on the development. :)

All right, I'll give you a hand. What information do you need from protonmail to run the Firefox extension? Compatible with FF 57 I imagine...
I am an interested user, not an industry professional; -)

Reply after one day from ProtonMail Support:

Currently, "Wildcard Compose URLs" are not working with ProtonMail and you have to log in to your ProtonMail account upon clicking on them if you are using a web browser for your ProtonMail account.

What the heck. What year will it be when this is fixed?

Bump

I suspect Protonmail will need to fix this. On my OS X machine, I modified the file ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/l9t79l8s.default/handlers.json file to add ProtonMail as a handler using @Noitidart's suggestion from 2016. After a FF restart I could select it in the UI, but on my setup it triggers PM's login page regardless if I'm logged in on other tabs or not. I'll try to go and bother PM about it now.

Back from PM's forums. It seems to be in the same state there - it's been suggested and lies dormant since a few years. If you are PM users I suggest you vote: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback then search mailto

Oh, I should have mentioned I fixed this issue by installing an extension on Brave called ProtonMail (unofficial) 1.9.0
