Say NO to chat reporting
Please don't waste your time reading this if you strongly like chat reporting.
In Minecraft 1.19.0 and up, chat messages are signed using a secret key that is unique to your account. By using these signatures, Mojang can know who actually sent the messages, so in 1.19.1 they added a system to report them to Mojang. Getting reported means a "highly trained human moderator" will see your messages and will take action, including PERMANENTLY getting you banned from ALL MULTIPLAYER.
We include a mod called No Chat Reports. On the client, it refuses to sign your messages. On the server, it strips all messages' signatures, as do many popular plugins.
These appear in the bottom-right of the screen when the chat bar is open.
- If you see a red eye icon, it means you are on Realms. Mojang is spying and can ban you for breaking their rules even though nobody reported you. Reporting still works and there's no way to disable this, except hosting a real server. You can also use a service like Aternos.
- If you see a red warning sign icon, it means you are still vulnerable, reporting functions for all players, including you, but Mojang isn't spying.
- If you see a yellow
i
, it means you are safe, and it's possible that so are all other players. On vanilla servers, other players will see a grey bar on the left of your message, a grey(!)
on the right, and there is a vanillaOnly Show Secure Chat
option which prevents your chat messages from being shown, but it's disabled by default. On modded servers, it likely means no chat messages are reportable and everyone will see your messages without any grey bar and(!)
. These servers would show a green checkmark once No Chat Reports gets smarter. - If you see a green checkmark, it means no chat messages are reportable and everyone will see your messages without any grey bar and
(!)
. Singleplayer always shows this.
By default, the encryption button is hidden to reduce confusion. To re-enable it, go to the Mod Menu, then find No Chat Reports, click Configure, then the Technical tab and set Show encryption button
to Yes
, then save your changes.
See this video by Aizistral, the mod's developer, to learn about encryption, or read the text version.
The main reason is that Mojang hasn't got any context regarding the messages, such as if the players chatting are IRL friends, or if the server allows some things, and we don't know how "highly trained" are their moderators, especially after the Bedrock bans.
Yes, you can, but we don't know how effective it is. Try here.
Does per-server reporting (report command, ticket etc.) still work? What should I do now if someone breaks the rules?
Of course. Do what you always did.
Yes, but only on Realms and on Bedrock featured servers.
