I wonder if this is a Wii VC thing? Am I the only one that this is consistently happening to?

This has happened twice more to me, most recently just now in the EU Weekly. Maybe my Wii is haunted and my trade off for never having a VC crash is Scarecrow's Song just randomly breaking instead.

I've done hundreds of seeds and nothing like this has ever happened.

So things that seem possibly relevant to me:

1. Set scarecrow's song, went adult, and saved via game over in Forest Temple
2. Then set FW in GTG (You cannot set FW in GTG in vanilla, something wonky could be going on here especially)
3. Then went child > adult > child > adult (something with the separate FW between ages?)
4. Used FW in Spirit to return to GTG, then set it in GTG again.

After all of this you attempted to finally finalize scarecrow's song. I feel one of these could be the culprit. I think each should be tested separately and then if none of them seem to trigger it on their own try again with all of them as it was in your playthrough.

More recently I've had the song just fail to work when setting it as adult but the same bug has happened to me after successfully using the song many times before. It's not the 9+ note bug, it is zero'd out in the save file and talking to the scarecrow as a child to see the song always looks just like the clip here: #554 (comment)

@r0bd0g I wish I knew what I was doing that was weird because it seems like it is mainly just me in here having this issue with a few outliers happening otherwise. I don't think I am special but nobody else seems to consistently get this but me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

e: Also I am sure that GTG has nothing to do with it given that this has happened to me a lot without touching GTG in-between, and it happened on 4.0 before the GTG FW changes (which were just one byte changes anyway, not something that should kill Scarecrow).

Like, I'd honestly vote for Free Scarecrow next time there is a weekly settings vote even though I much prefer having to route a Lake trip as child and then adult because I am sick and tired of wasting 3+ minutes to re-set Scarecrow's Song because it happened to die on me.

Hamsda asked me to bump this, since I just had something similar happen to me. I'm on Bizhawk, the seed was https://ootrandomizer.com/seed/get?id=698408 .

I copied the file into Save Slot 2, but I never fixed it, so you can play my scarecrow song (LR X4), and it will list it as playing, but the scarecrow will never summon. SaveRAM (both Auto and actual in case either doesn't work) are added in a google drive folder at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZIChnzkMUjBfeabIDJ-qt16811EnwsmB?usp=sharing. I can't attach to this bug since GH doesn't support the file types.

I never went to GTG. I was never once able to actually summon the scarecrow.

Looks like, when playing the song as adult, you were not in the right spot to trigger the event (no music staff came up), so you merely played the song into the void and then immediately talked to the scarecrow after.

Yup, can confirm. Blame Hamsda for interrupting me when I was about to go check on that to tell me that I must have triggered the bug :(. Looks like we've got some PEBKAC (or perhaps PEBCAC in this case?).

I don't think this is 9th note shenanigans since this user doesn't appear to play the song quickly.

I don't know that I believe the 'play the song too quickly' thing is even a real problem. I don't play the song slowly, and sometimes I can hear extra notes after the 8th when I set the song, and I've never had this problem. I think it's always been, something corrupts the song, and it mysteriously having 9 notes now is just another way it could get corrupted.

I still want to know what cuphat is doing that nobody else is doing that causes it to be so prevalent for him. Maybe some cosmetic setting he's always used that nobody else uses who knows. Sorry for the straw grasp.

I just got my first 9 note scarecrow. I was still able to confirm it b/c I luckily guessed what the extra note was without really realizing what was happening. And from then on it played with the 8-note combination, but the playback featured all 9. When I set the song, I decided my first attempt was too slow lol, so I decided to set it again. I don't feel like what I played was particularly fast, and the extra note wasn't quick after the others, it was kinda slow? and it wasn't the note I would have expected it to be if I mashed too fast, I do <><><><> and this was an extra >, which I mean, it's possible I hit that extra by accident uh...

What I kinda of feel like happened is, when I set the song again, it didn't completely overwrite my previous attempt at setting the song? and somehow the later notes from the first song end up still there after???
