Description of FIG Legal and Policy

The Legal and Policy Foundational Interest Group (FIG) is focused on the non-legal advice of open source and standards pertaining to rights, intellectual property, laws, and policies that will arise from the creation or enhancement of the process or technologies related to the Metaverse. It provides a place of discussion for matters that may enable, prohibit, inhibit or cause issues with the direct or indirect implementation of Metaverse policies or technologies. See the FIG's charter for full details.

What does the Foundational Interest Group do?

  • Discuss IP protection either through trademarks or copyrights of commercial and user-generated content.
  • Explore unfair competition, personality and design rights.
  • Discuss existing and future governing laws, jurisdictions and data privacy laws focusing on international and localized policies.
  • Identify and discuss areas related to personal use defense, evidence of use in prosecution, antitrust, impersonation, and the existing rights worldwide and nationally.
  • Identify and define the process for quality control, technological control, and contextual controls for the integrity of content usage.

How do I get involved?

  • Contact us on Discord. The FIG has a specific chat channel legal-policy
  • Attend any of our public meetings by connecting to the #legal-policy voice channel on OMF's Discord server. See the OMF Calendar for upcoming meetings and details.
    • The FIG hosts a weekly meeting on Fridays at 1:00pm ET / 18:00 UTC / 7:00 PM CET to discuss Legal and Policy topics, recently contributed work, research and refinement on approaches, pending RFCs, and other items of interest to the FIG. Look for the meeting titled FIG-Legal and Policy on OMF calendar. Meeting agendas are posted in advanced as GitHub discussions and anyone can raise points for discussion.
  • Subscribe to our mailing list, which is used for polls, discussions and features database.

Who can attend or participate?

The OMF cannot work without the help and input from as many of its community members as possible. You do not need anyone’s permission to get involved and contribute to the project. The #artificial-intel channel on OMF Discord is a great place to begin getting involved. Many of our community members regularly share ideas, updates, and resources there. You can also find a number of topics under the GitHub Discussions area which need your input.
