Overview

We'd like to have data-informed arguments in favor of sponsoring open source. For this issue, we want to investigate how contributing to open source improves keeping a solid engineering team. For example:

  • Do these companies see better employee retention, such as by actual numbers and/or employees reporting themselves more likely to stay?
  • Are either of the above questions' answers more or less significant for junior, mid-range, senior, and/or staff+ employees?

We can think of "contribute to open source" as either or all of:

  • Spending money and getting on corporate sponsor lists (e.g. https://typescript-eslint.io/#financial-contributors)
  • Scheduling developer time to work on community open source projects
  • Releasing & supporting their own open source projects
  • ...any other open source activities one can think of!

We don't know what the answers are to these questions. But having some kind of polling / metrics at hand to get to answers would be great.

Additional Info

Please do comment in this issue if you have data to inform these questions and/or would like to investigate! ❤️
