<title>SUJET DE LA COMÉDIE
DE LYSISTRATA.</title>
</head>
<p>L<hi rend="smallcap">e</hi> but du poète, dans cette pièce,
comme dans plusieurs autres, telles
que <hi rend="italic">les Acharniens, la Paix, les Oi-</hi>
<hi rend="italic">seaux,</hi> est d’engager ses concitoyens à
terminer une guerre désastreuse pour
la Grèce.</p>
<p>Lysistrata, épouse d’un des premiers
citoyens d’Athènes, pour contraindre
les hommes à conclure la paix, réunit
les femmes de son pays et celles des
principales villes grecques, et leur fait
jurer de n’avoir plus de commerce avec
leurs maris, jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient mis
fin à la guerre. En même temps, elle
s’empare de la citadelle et des trésors

qui y sont renfermés. L’argent manque
bientôt aux hommes pour l’entretien de
l’armée. Une troupe de vieillards se
présente devant la citadelle, et se dis-
pose à en faire le siège, ils sont re-
poussés. Cependant on ne tarde pas à
sentir les inconvéniens d’une pareille
résolution. D’un côté Lysistrata a beau-
coup de peine à contraindre les femmes
à garder leurs sermens, chacune in-
vente des prétextes pour retourner à la
maison, et aller rejoindre son mari.
D’un autre côté, les maris souffrent
cruellement de leur veuvage, et ne
peuvent se résoudre à vivre plus long-
temps séparés de leurs femmes. Des
rapprochemens ont lieu; on entre en
explication. Sparte et Athènes envoient
des ambassadeurs avec pleins pouvoirs
pour traiter des conditions de la paix.
L’accord une fois terminé, les portes

de la citadelle s’ouvrent : chaque mari
retrouve sa femme : les villes rivales
oublient leurs inimitiés dans la joie des
danses et des festins.</p>
<p>On voit que cette comédie a un côté
politique, en ce qu’on y agite la ques-
tion de la paix et de la guerre. On y
traite des affaires publiques avec cette
liberté dont le théâtre d’Athènes nous
a déjà offert tant d’exemples. Mais sous
un autre rapport, les peintures qu’elle
présente sont de nature à donner une
idée étrange des mœurs antiques : les
images et les paroles les plus licencieu-
ses, tranchons le mot, les plus obscè-
nes, y reviennent continuellement.
Toute la pièce roule sur le singulier
supplice infligé aux hommes pour les
réduire à faire la paix, et sur l’état
violent qui résulte pour eux de l’ab-
sence de leurs femmes. Nous ne sau-

rions dire ici en quels termes crûs
s’exprime leur refrain continuel. Nous
renvoyons aussi au texte (v. 1145) pour
voir le parti extrême que les ambassa-
deurs lacédémoniens menacent de pren-
dre, si les femmes les poussent à bout.
Sous le rapport de l’art, il y a une
scène des plus comiques et admirable-
ment filée, entre Myrrhine, une des
femmes athéniennes, et son époux Ci-
nésias. Le mari, qu’une abstinence
longue et forcée a rendu amoureux de
sa femme, lui fait de vives instances
pour qu’elle se rende à ses désirs.
Celle-ci, dans une situation prolongée
et merveilleusement soutenue, a l’air
de compatir à sa peine et de céder à sa
passion, tout en se moquant de lui :
elle met en œuvre toutes les ruses de
la coquetterie féminine, toutes les res-
sources de cette malice et de cette

fausseté qui paraissent être un don de
nature, et appartenir à tous les siècles
et à tous les pays. Mais quelle que soit
la perfection de l’art, on ne peut s’em-
pêcher de remarquer quelle distance
sépare de nos mœurs et de nos idées un
théâtre où une pareille scène pouvait
être jouée publiquement, et où l’on
voyait le mari et la femme faire lon-
guement tous les apprêts nécessaires
pour coucher ensemble. Aussi, malgré
les thefs-d’œuvre de l’art antique,
malgré l’éclat que la glorieuse élite
des hommes de génie jeta sur la société
athénienne, on ne peut méconnaître
l’état d’imperfection où s’arrêta la cul-
ture morale de cette société. Les dé-
tails cités plus haut sont l’indice d’une
civilisation encore bien matérielle;
on y reconnaît un peuple bien en-
foncé dans la vie des sens; et si les

louangeurs du temps passé ont encore
quelque peine à convenir qu’au fond
nos mœurs soient réellement épurées,
ils ne contesteront pas du moins aux
temps modernes les progrès de la pu-
deur publique.</p>
<p>Quant à la date de celte comédie,
plusieurs passages de la pièce même
servent à la déterminer avec assez de
certitude. Lysistrata se plaint (v. 104)
que son mari est depuis sept mois à
Pylos : cette place était donc encore
au pouvoir des Athéniens. Or, elle fut
reprise par les Lacédémoniens la 23<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>
année de la guerre du Péloponèse,
sous l’archonte Dioclès, selon Diodore
(l. XIII). Puis elle ajoute (v. 108) :
« Depuis que les Milésiens nous ont
« trahis... » La défection des Milésiens
eut lieu, à l’instigation d’Alcibiade,
au commencement de la 20<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> année de

la guerre (<hi rend="italic">Thucydide,</hi> VIII, 17). La
représentation de <hi rend="italic">Lysistrata</hi> est donc
postérieure àla 20<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> année de la guerre,
et antérieure à la 23<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> année. D’autres
endroits, qui font allusion à des désas-
tres récens, ne peuvent se rapporter
qu’à la défaite essuyée en Sicile (v. 586 :
« Nous enfantons des fils, pour les
« voir partir à l’armée. — Tais-toi,
« ne rappelle pas nos malheurs. » —
V. 1041 : « C’est assez des maux pré-
« sens »). Enfin deux autres passages
relatifs au gouvernement des Quatre-
Cents à Samos et à Athènes (v. 315 et
v. 388), font supposer que ce régime
tyrannique était renversé, lorsque Aris-
tophane faisait jouer sa comédie. Il
parle de Pisandre, un des chefs des
Quatre-Cents, comme d’un voleur.
Sans doute, sous leur règne,le poète
n’aurait pu attaquer de front un homme

tout-puissant, même sans parler de la
loi qui défendait de traduire les magis-
trats sur le théâtre. Or, l’abolition du
gouvernement des Quatre-Cents, et la
fuite de Pisandre, sont rapportées par
Thucydide (l. VII), à l’été de la 21<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>
année de la guerre. Tout s’accorde donc
avec une des préfaces grecques, publiée
par Kuster, pour fixer la représentation
de <hi rend="italic">Lysistrata</hi> à la 1<hi rend="superscript">re</hi> année de la 92<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>
olympiade, 412 ans avant J.-C.</p>

rendez-vous au temple de Bacchus ou de Pan,
ou bien à l’un des temples de Vénus<hi rend="superscript">1</hi>, la foule
des tambourins ne permettrait pas même de
passer. Ici, aucune d’elles n’est encore arrivée,
excepté cette voisine qui sort de chez elle. Bon-
jour, Calonice.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Bonjour, Lysistrata. Qu’est-ce donc qui te
tracasse? Quitte cet air sombre, mon enfant;
ne fronce pas les sourcils, cela ne te sied pas.</p>

<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Elles avaient ordre de se trouver ici, pour
délibérer sur une affaire qui n’est pas de peu
d’importance : elles dorment, au lieu de venir.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Elles viendront, ma chère : il n’est pas si aisé
aux femmes de sortir de la maison. L’une est
retenue par son mari; l’autre réveille son esclave;
celle-ci couche son enfant, celle-là le baigne;
une autre lui donne la bouillie.</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Il y a des affaires plus pressantes qui les at-
tendent.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Mais, ma chère Lysistrata, dans quel dessein

as-tu convoqué les femmes? Quelle est donc
cette affaire? est-elle grande?</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Elle est grande.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Et est-elle grosse?</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Oui, elle est grosse.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Alors, comment se fait-il qu’elles ne soient
pas toutes venues?</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Ce n’est pas ce que tu penses; car nous se-
rions déjà au grand complet : mais il s’agit d’une
affaire que j’ai conçue moi-même, et retournée
en tous sens, pendant de longues insomnies.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Il faut que ce soit bien mince et bien subtil<hi rend="superscript">1</hi>,
pour avoir été retourné en tous sens.</p>

bien peu de chose.</p>

<p>Il dépend de nous d’assurer le sort de la répu-
blique, de détruire entièrement les Pélopo-
nésiens.....</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Les détruire est une excellente idée.</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Et d’anéantir tous les Béotiens.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Non pas tous. Epargne au moins les anguilles<hi rend="superscript">1</hi>.</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>Pour Athènes, je ne ferai pas contre elle un
vœu semblable : imagine autre chose. Si les

<p>Mais les femmes pourraient-elles exécuter un
dessein si grànd, si glorieux, elles qui restent
toujours àla maison, bien fardées, bien parées,
vêtues de robes jaunes, de cimbériques<hi rend="superscript">1</hi> flot-
tantes, et chaussées de péribarides<hi rend="superscript">2</hi>?</p>
<p>LYSISTRATA.</p>
<p>C’est précisément là ce qui nous sauvera, je
l’espère; oui, les petites robes jaunes, le fard,
les péribarides, l’orcanette<hi rend="superscript">3</hi>, les tuniques trans-
parentes.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Comment cela?</p>

<p>Je sais pourtant que celles-ci ont monté en

<p>Les Acharniennes même, que je croyis de-
voir être les premières à venir, ne paraissent
pas encore.</p>
<p>CALONICE.</p>
<p>Cependant l’épouse de Théagène, voulant
venir ici, a consulté la statue d’Hécatc. Mais en
voilà qui arrivent : en voici d’autres encore.
Tiens, tiens! d’où sont-elles?</p>

<p>Femmes, il me semble voir de la fumée et
des flammes; on dirait un grand feu. Courons
vite. Vole, vole, Nicodia, avant que Calyca et
Critylla ne périssent étouffées dans les flammes,
et victimes des lois les plus barbares et de la
méchanceté des vieillards. Hélas! c’est ce que
je crains : suis-je accourue trop tard? Dès le
point du jour, j’étais à la fontaine, où j’ai eu
bien de la peine à emplir ce vase, à cause du
