I've followed the install instructions for OS X to the letter, everything is working fine except for the last part:

Test OpenNI2. make install-openni2 (may need sudo), then run NiViewer

NiViewer does not exist anywhere on my system so i'm not able to run it.

Thanks

I found an executable in /usr/local/share/openni2/tools however I do not see a new window appear when I run it, just the stdout from the process.

Thanks, just ran it and also only seeing the text output.

Also is there any clear information anywhere on how to get the skeleton tracking working with NiTE on OS X or Linux?

Hey guys, any update ? can't open NiViewer.

Same issue: OpenNI2 libfreenect driver doesn't seem to be picked up.

Here's the output from NiViewer:

openDevice failed:
    DeviceOpen using default: no devices found

Press any key to continue . . .

I've installed OpenNI2 via homebrew as instructed in the README:

/usr/local/Cellar/openni2/2.2.0.33/share/openni2/tools/NiViewer

and I can see the driver installed as expecetd:

ls /usr/local/Cellar/openni2/2.2.0.33/share/openni2/tools/OpenNI2/Drivers/
PS1080.ini          PSLink.ini          libOniFile.dylib        libPS1080.dylib         libPSLink.dylib         libfreenect2-openni2.0.dylib    libfreenect2-openni2.dylib

The only thing that looked odd during the build process was this warning:

 CMake Warning (dev):
   Policy CMP0042 is not set: MACOSX_RPATH is enabled by default. Run "cmake
   --help-policy CMP0042" for policy details. Use the cmake_policy command to
   set the policy and suppress this warning.

   MACOSX_RPATH is not specified for the following targets:

    freenect2
    freenect2-openni2

 This warning is for project developers. Use -Wno-dev to suppress it.

Is this something to worry about ?

Additionally I've update all OpenNI.ini files to point to the OpenNI2/Drivers folder containing libfreenect2-openni2.0.dylib:

[Log]
; 0 - Verbose; 1 - Info; 2 - Warning; 3 - Error. Default - None
Verbosity=0
LogToConsole=1
LogToFile=1

[Device]
;Override=""

[Drivers]
; Location of the drivers specified by a relative path based on OpenNI's shared library or an absolute path.
; Path separator "/" can be used to be portable for any platforms.
; Default - OpenNI2/Drivers
Repository=OpenNI2/Drivers

I've done this for all OpenNI.ini files found on the system:

/usr/local/Cellar/openni2/2.2.0.33/lib/ni2/OpenNI.ini
/usr/local/Cellar/openni2/2.2.0.33/share/openni2/samples/Bin/OpenNI.ini
/usr/local/Cellar/openni2/2.2.0.33/share/openni2/tools/OpenNI.ini

Update

I've noticed the Protonect sample works only with cl or cuda but not gl or cpu flags. This is using the default GPU. I have tried passing 0,1 then 2 as arguments to the gpu flag, but I haven't noticed a change. Here what the output looks like:

./bin/Protonect gl
Version: 0.2.0
Environment variables: LOGFILE=<protonect.log>
Usage: ./bin/Protonect [-gpu=<id>] [gl | cl | cuda | cpu] [<device serial>]
        [-noviewer] [-norgb | -nodepth] [-help] [-version]
        [-frames <number of frames to process>]
To pause and unpause: pkill -USR1 Protonect

Additionally, based on #632 and #632 I've tried to see what's going on using dtruss. You can see the output here
As far as I can tell libfreenect2-openni2.0.dylib is referenced, but I'm not sure what fails and why.

What's the simplest way to use NITE Skeleton tracking with libfreenect2 on OSX ?

Update
I finally managed to get Skeleton tracking with libfreenect2.
D'oh moment as I was using NiTE 1.5. I've downloaded NiTE2.2 from here, then copied libfreenect2/build/lib/libfreenect2-openni2.0.dylib to NiTE-MacOSX-x64-2.2/Samples/Bin/OpenNI2/Drivers then ran one of SimpleUserTracker sample.

There is still a catch: samples that just print to the console run, but the ones that open a window and render don't work. No window is rendered, as if that thread is blocked somehow.
That is when I use the integrated Intel GPU. If I use the discrete nVidia GPU the app crashes:

Similar to how the Protonect sample crashes with gl flag.

Did you try another packet processors? I'm afraid that the OpenGLDepthPacketProcessor is conflicting with the GLUT.

I did not completely understand what do you mean. I found this issue - #386 And tried to change code somehow similar:
` // setup context
glfwDefaultWindowHints();
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_CONTEXT_VERSION_MAJOR, 3);
#ifdef APPLE
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_CONTEXT_VERSION_MINOR, 3);
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_OPENGL_FORWARD_COMPAT, GL_TRUE);
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_OPENGL_PROFILE, GLFW_OPENGL_CORE_PROFILE);
#else
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_CONTEXT_VERSION_MINOR, 3);
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_OPENGL_PROFILE, GLFW_OPENGL_CORE_PROFILE);
#endif
glfwWindowHint(GLFW_VISIBLE, debug ? GL_TRUE : GL_FALSE);

GLFWwindow* window = glfwCreateWindow(1024, 848, "OpenGLDepthPacketProcessor", 0, parent_window);
`
But result is the same.

I am (still today) experiencing the same issue. No GUI for NiViewer.

2021-06-28 21:52:11.597 NiViewer[13246:577628] GLUT Warning: glutInit being called a second time.

-edit-

Got this actually working by compiling against freeglut and running on XQuartz via DISPLAY=:0.0 ./NiViewer
