Website url redirection #105
Comments
From @6a6d74 We want to use the openwis.io http://openwis.io domain for our URLs; e.g. So we can cite specific articles and rules using an authoritative URL. Currently, the documentation on GH-Pages has URLs as follows (e.g. for article 19.1): http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/articles/19-language.html#article-19.1 I think it should be: http://openwis.io/doc/articles/19-language.html#article-19.1 (or similar - notice use of "doc" path segment; just a suggestion!) |
Do we know how to get github to recognize and host the url that does not
begin with openwis.github.io? The way that I read things (and please
correct me if I'm wrong) is that the pages hosted on github followed the
url structure of *<account>.github.io/. <http://github.io/.>.. *or is this
just a default?
Also, for clarification: are you saying we want to change the part of the
url that reads *http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/
<http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/>* to *http://openwis.io/
<http://openwis.io/>* ?
As far as the articles are concerned, I think it is best they are left in
the structure they are in, instead of being placed in a docs directory.
While it would be possible, the way that things are configured to build the
pages in jekyll this would make updating things more difficult than they
currently are. I think that the articles are sufficiently self-contained
collection of document pages that it would not be necessary to group them
with other static documents. (And while the url could be changed without
moving the documents, I think it makes more sense to keep the url to be an
accurate representation of the structure).

Regarding the website at the openwis.io domain, it would be simplest to
configure the DNS to refer to what is currently available at

required for the Jekyll project to use openwis.io as the base-URL ...

@solson-nws Hi Steve, Are we intending to continue to use Discourse as the forum or do we need to discuss this at the 2018 Annual Meeting? |
We will be using discourse. However, we don't have a current location for
testing, until we can purchase the discourse license. So, we should talk
about whether or not thats acceptable.

OK, could you please add to the TC agenda for 10 May 2018. |
@solson-nws - can this now be closed as Discourse is in place? |
Agreed. URL redirect would be the easiest approach. We still need a ‘forum’, which is why I brought up the Discourse deployment. Jeremy From: Rémy Giraud remy.giraud@meteo.fr Jeremy, -- From: "Jeremy Tandy" jeremy.tandy@metoffice.gov.uk Steve, Jude, see attached a discussion with Steve Foreman about the OpenCDMS project and the potential to host it in OpenWIS Association. The important point for this particular discussion is: “”” The up to date materials are published at https://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/ Material published at http://www.openwis.io/cms/ is out of date. Issue #105 (#105) identifies the problem. It was opened more than 2-years ago. Sticking point appears to be the deployment of Discourse to replace the forum. Please can we get the information at openwis.io synchronised & up to date as a matter of urgency? Preferably by putting the URL redirection in place? Many thanks, Jeremy |
Please also see the position on Discourse- #468 |
Per SC on 11 Jan 19 - It was agreed that the http re-direct should be implemented as soon as possible to remove the duplicate sources of OpenWIS Association information appearing in the internet. @benjaminsaclier to work with @remy-gibault to make the necssary changes. |
@benjaminsaclier : Can you work with Remy to resolve this? |
@benjaminsaclier - Is there any update on this please? |
@benjaminsaclier @remy-gibault - Is this now complete? |
Answers from Rémy:
Adding a subdomain on github pointing to http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/ might be a solution (to be tested). Another ugly option would be to do an http redirect from the openwis.io/cms root page to http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/. |
Proposal agreed during TC May-2019. This should be resolved soon! |
Per @adrian-wood 's email on 22 May @remy-gibault has access to change things in Github |
@benjaminsaclier @loiclg @gib: How is this work coming along? The goal was to complete this by the end of June. Please update when you can. Thanks! Steve |
Suggestion by @adrian-wood is to: To get the http://openwis.github.io/ URL to work we’d need to rename the openwis-documentation repository so that it follows the appropriate naming convention (username.github.io) as per the following instructions - https://pages.github.com/ @remy-gibault is unable to do this. @solson-nws and @benjaminsaclier - please advise on next steps |
As agreed during TC of may in NWS, and as a temporary solution, a redirection has been done (using .htaccess): This is a temporary solution until the proper gihub repo renaming. |
Thanks for confirming @loiclg. I've a quick search on Google and the rediection worked. @solson-nws @benjaminsaclier - can this issue now be closed? |
@solson-nws @benjaminsaclier - Can this issue be closed? |
14 feb - Agreed to close |
The url of the new OpenWIS Association website is currently http://openwis.github.io/openwis-documentation/ - ie: based on the default naming convention for gh-pages sites. We would prefer to keep http://www.openwis.io, the url of the old site.
Make this possible by redirection.
