For the time being, we can change font on the text area by typing the name and see if that exists or by opening the control panel and checking the available fonts windows have. Can the list of the fonts that windows have preinstalled be displayed on a drop-down menu for easier acces?

I originally had a drop-down for the font selector, but because the font list is very long (180+ default fonts; many people have more installed) I felt that an auto complete would make for a better UI, however, as you might not know what font to select a full list may be better. Maybe a way to choose between both? I'll look into it.
The option you proposed about using both should be great. The first thing that came to my mind is how Microsoft Word uses both autocomplete and a list to select a font. This will be very useful.
