Translations probably should be started in early February, after translatable strings will be initially stabilized (some review from native English speakers would be appreciated) so first beta could be localized at least a bit.
We will probably stick with standard Qt infrastructure:
http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5/internationalization.html#producing-translations

It is more modern that good ol' gettext and supported out of the box.

There is need to setup procedures and maybe some infrastructure to improve translations work flow, like translation statistics etc.

Any useful ideas are welcomed. :-)

Also maybe this account would be useful - if it is set to deliver the prompt on the e-mail added, when the account was created.

Probably we will use Transifex, as suggested by AlexTalker in another ticket.

Hi, I have never used Transifex and I don't know how much time I can devote to this task, but I'm willing to collaborate translating Otter to Spanish.

For what I've seen, Transifex is a collaborative service right?

I can help for Portuguese and French. At the time of the translation, if I am not being participative here, you can send an email to me asking for it.

On Transifex, I suppose. My account there is fri - for the maintainers to be able to add me as coordinator for Czech language. :-) The localization file format? Could we get it already now in advance?

Emdek commented Mar 3, 2014

@pafri, most probably yes, I don't see better alternative. ;-)
We will use TS format, native for Qt, it's XML based, preferred tool is Qt Linguist.

Here is example file:

Also the example file could be used already now, and then add possible changes to it, as I understand it (?)

I made a preliminary translation into Russian language. Some lines until he left without translation, perhaps they need to be changed:

BookmarkPropertiesDialog.ui:14 -- 'Dialog' -- set to 'Bookmarks Properties'
BookmarksContentsWidget.cpp:190 -- 'Question' -- set to 'Delete folder'
MainWindow.ui:484 -- 'actionA' -- I do not understand what it is
MainWindow.cpp:266               -- 'Question'        -- 'Close file'
PreferencesDialog.cpp:799        -- 'Question'        -- 'Delete profile'
QtWebKitWebPage.cpp:201          -- 'Question'        -- 'Resending forms'
TransfersManager.cpp:394         -- 'Question'        -- 'File is exists'
SaveSessionDialog.ui:22          -- 'Session ttitle'  -- misprint
SessionsManagerDialog.cpp:115    -- 'Confirm'         -- 'Delete session'

SessionsManagerDialog.cpp:123 -- 'Failed to delete session.'
SaveSessionDialog.cpp:86 -- 'Failed to save session.'
Application.cpp:307              -- 'URL to open.'
Application.cpp:311              -- 'Starts private session.'
Application.cpp:312 -- 'Sets profile and cache paths to directories inside the same directory as that of application binary.'

-- remove dots

Application.cpp:308 'Uses <path> as cache directory.'
Application.cpp:309 'Uses <path> as profile directory.'
Application.cpp:310 'Restores session <session> if it exists.'

-- remove dots and maybe use %1 format instead <...>?

I'm trying to formulate the procedure the way I understand it from this thread. Correct me when I get it wrong.

  1. The translator should download the gistfile https://gist.githubusercontent.com/Emdek/7b40dd2271a92375928b/raw/gistfile1.xml
  2. The translator should load the gistfile into Qt Linguist and figure out how to translate with the help of instructions here http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5/internationalization.html#producing-translations
  3. The translator should create an account in Transifex https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/otter-browser/
  4. In Transifex, the translator's work is reviewed/approved/finalised by people assigned for that language, most likely by himself with the right permissions.

Tell me if I am missing anything, because I don't want to miss a thing.

pafri commented May 4, 2014

As I see it, you are on right way. You requested the language creation on Transifex, also in the moment, you would be accepted and the language team created/ you accepted as translator, you can start the work.

Of course, you could take the template, open it in Qt linguist, set the locale to for example Estonian, and start the work. Then after the Estonian team creation, you could simply proceed and upload the translation file (no matter how much higher number of strings would be translated to that moment).

Emdek commented May 4, 2014

@ersi-dnd, that gist is outdated.
I'm not familiar with workflow used by Transifex, but AFAIK it doesn't require use of Qt Linguist, although it's good idea to make use of it, since it allows to preview translation of forms.

@ersi-dnd
Copy link

ersi-dnd commented May 4, 2014

@pafri What is "the template"? Will it be assigned to me with a message at Transifex or is it some obvious file somewhere that I am missing?

@pafri
Copy link

pafri commented May 5, 2014

Now when you are accepted on Transifex to Estonian team of Otter Browser, you could download the file from there for translation and work offline, and upload the translated file back (whenever you want, potentially after each change you make, but practically, when you for example translate 100 strings, and want to continue tomorrow, and when you have intention to upload the file today), or you could use the Transifex GUI and start translating there, without download/upload the file.

The files there are untranslated, also the second part of translation couples in strings is empty now, and you can fill it with translation. That could be seen as template for translation. Locale is already set to proper language.
