Custom Dot Navigation - Nesting Divs or SVGs

Is there a way to nest divs within divs for the owl pagination?

I'm looking to create the image below, but I've noticed two issues. When trying to create custom dots, I can't use SVGs or nest divs within the .owl-dot div. The content will display, but you can't slick the SVG or anything inside a nested div. If you click any of the first three hexagons... it automatically goes back to the first slide.

Is there a way to nest divs inside the .owl-dot div pagination or use SVG? I'd like to use an SVG so I can target background changes on hover or past state.
