often depends on platform!

PATH (windows)
LD_LIBRARY_PATH on most unixen
whatever the equivalent to LD_LIBRARY_PATH is on macOS
also could be something entirely different!

Some of these variables are "used" indirectly, and we should make sure that is clear as well.
