Added in #480 for #436 and #22, the Linux configuration enables the use of a compile time LINUX constant for certain runtimes; however, it is only a work around. A proper solution is pending, and blocked on dotnet/cli#465.

I believe this is maybe blocking native compilation, as dotnet build -n fails when it attempts to publish the native bits due to Linux not being a valid (native) configuration.
@andschwa is this still relevant? We believe we're probably fine with the existing workaround (or even better, it's been completely supplanted by the move to CSProj.) /cc @dongbo
