Currently, in ObjectAtom._tobuffer always pickle.HIGHEST_PROTOCOL is used. I have code that runs on Python versions 3.3 and 3.4 and this leads to incompatible HDF5 files.

Maybe have this as a separate argument to the VLArray constructor?
