Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is a term to describe the collecting and analyzing of freely available and publicly disseminated information to derive actionable tasks. As a result of faster and more convenient access to the Internet, OSINT is impacting every sector by allowing organizations to leverage the vast quantity of produced personal information individuals and businesses store online. Of specific interest is the manner in which OSINT impacts the cyber security domain by fundamentally changing the way organizations are dealing with cyber-threats. Bad actors are always on the lookout for vulnerabilities and devise newer ways to make them realized threats. It is therefore crucial to identify publicly available information to uncover potential threats before bad actors can use this information to structure their attacks. To this end, we introduce the UniGather OSINT framework, a modular Python-based tool which co-ordinates bespoke and existing tools to create a vulnerability report for a given domain.

Tool Functionality

The tool is coded in Python, bringing together a series of packages for web scraping and OSINT. We demonstrate the workflow of the tool below. Currently, up to five identifiers are supported to extract data (domain registration, web technologies, subdomain and open port recognition, email address breach detection, confidentional document recognition). By default, UniGather is modular in nature by providing flexibility to extract data for only selected modules (based on user input via the interface). As output, UniGather generates a spreadsheet of extracted details. During its first search for a particular domain the xlsx files is created (and updated by subsequent searches). For example a search for domain registration details for facebook.com generates \textit{facebook.com.xlsx}. Any further searches for facebook.com will update the existing file with a new sheet (i.e. \textit{Web Technologies} in the existing file without deleting any previously captured details). Please note that while the above use-case solution is cyber security focused, we have designed the tool to be modular and extensible to extract data with any other identifiers as per the requirement of the business.

Setup

The tool is generally plug-n-play. However there are two setup steps required. Paths to dependencies must be stated at the following location:

Additionally, the email breach detection module is reliant on hunter.io. Therefore an account is required. To use this module, please create an account and enter the relevant details at the following location.

Development Steps

The tool GUI interface build up brief:

The tool GUI interface has been generated using tkinter library which helps in generating a tool window. It provides us with options to create labels, text entry boxes, check-boxes and much more (there is no end for creativity) It is also possible to attach jpg/png files to the tool using PIL library.There are many other toos/packages for building GUI in python like PyQt5, WxPython and Kivy however we have used tKinter owing to its simplicity in usage and because the focus was more on attaching the data fetching code to be attached easily for execution and displaying output.However this does not mean other tools are complex, its just that we have used tKinter. The overall build is pretty simple:

  1. The framework/GUI window was generated to get the initial look and feel.
  2. Relevant labels, text entry boxes and checkboxes were created
  3. The functions created were attached to the labels and text entry and output code to the display area
  4. All functioning of the code and output was checked
  5. Code was further adjusted a few times for specific presentation style on the output area
  6. Tool cosmetics were further refined by adjusting placements of each element
  7. Tool title logo file), tool trademark logo were inserted using appropiate code lines

The two repositories are sublist3r and builtwith however python libraries were available for both of these repos so I used those. I have provided a brief of the library/package used for each parameter or identifier in the tool code.

Repos/Libraries for the tool options

  1. Domain registration details: Python package "whois"

  2. Subdomains and Open ports: python package "sublist3r" for enumerating subdomains and ports. Tweaked the code a little for displaying the subdomains and ports together.

  3. Web Technologies on the domain: python package "builtwith" along with combination of web scraping using "request package", to concatenate details obtained via builtwith and request package and present a combination data.

  4. Email breach details: Entirely web scraping using i) find element/XPATH method ii) beautifulsoup package

  5. Documents hosted on domain: Web scraping by engaging pyautogui for mouse movement automation and then use "OS" package to read file path and return output
