You know the source code for ROCm Info is here https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/rocminfo

Line 900 it failure on getting System Info
// Acquire and display system information
system_info_t sys_info;

@kochd @ leophys you are both using custom kernel driver, you mostly seeing an issue that the driver did not load correctly

Firstly check if the KFD module is successfully loaded:
lsmod | grep kfd
Then try if the information can be retrieved correctly with root access:
sudo /opt/rocm/bin/rocminfo

As indicated by the above post, this is usually an issue with the amdkfd or amdgpu driver loading and exposing the device. Things to check are:
.
'dmesg | grep amdgpu'
'dmesg | grep amdkfd'

Also, check that the user you are running as is part of the "video" group and that the /dev/kfd device is available and has 666 permissions. I also suggest that you run this command and post any errors:
'strace ./clinfo'.

This should indicate if there are any configuration errors with you system.

Yes its amdgpu driver loaded by default with RX570 -what next please to resolve below after i run rcominfo-

The error you are seeing clearly indicates that the device is not accessible in some way. This error is very generic and could be caused by a range of problems, from your driver not loading, your docker image not exposing the devices correctly or a mismatch between your driver and your libhsakmt library. The first thing to do is verify things work 'on the metal'. If you can run clinfo or rocminfo on the actual system you know that your drivers are fine. Next, when you start up your docker image, check that both the /dev/kfd and /dev/dri devices are exposed.

Problem solved!
The rocminfo output is coming as expected by running the container with root privilege..

How was the issue solved? I am still getting the problem. I tried using the latest version of rocm but ended up in the same.

@pradeepisro if you just did an install today, you may be seeing problem #510. If you're running Ubuntu, please ensure you're not running kernel 4.15.0-33 at the moment, as the ROCk kernel drivers are currently not working properly with it. We are working to fix this.

@calvintam236 it's probably a bad idea to piggyback your tech support request on an already-closed thread. It's a good way to get your problem ignored. :) This is a common error that is often because of a misconfigured system, so it's not like we're going to reopen issues like this each time a user sees the problem.

That said, it looks like you don't have the package rocm-dkms installed. In addition, you don't have the amdgpu or amdkfd modules loaded, so it's likely that you also do not have the rock-dkms package installed.

@jlgreathouse sorry about that. I did apt install rocm-dkms, and I'm still getting this error.

@gstoner Well, I'm not running any KVM. I only run Docker, which is not KVM. I have no such problem in other machines to use docker after installing rocm-dkms..

@calvintam236 your base driver is not loading, did you try upgrading the base driver to 1.8.3 current most Ubuntu base driver which broke the KCL for DKMS in base AMDGPU Kernel Driver in 1.8.2

@calvintam236

@gstoner I ran apt update (ROCm via apt), and I am getting All packages are up to date., so I believe I'm on the latest release.

Looks like someone else posted an issue on the same problem as I have at #519. We can continue over there.

@gstoner Hardware spec:
Ryzen 1700X + 2x RX470. They're on PCIe 3 slots. ROCm was working in the last 8 months until last week.

Your kfd module is broken for some reason -- likely due to a failed upgrade. The inability to rocm rocminfo is because you don't have a working KFD.

I don't know how easy it's going to be for us to walk through how to fix this, and I'm not sure how educational it would be for future readers to try a dozen possible ways of fixing this, since it's likely this issue is specific to your exact installation. The simplest way to fix this would be to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch, though I understand that's not ideal and may cause you a lot of needless hassle. That said, if you're primarily looking to get ROCm back up and running, installing everything from scratch should work if you haven't changed anything about your hardware lately.

Could you attempt to autoremove/purge the package rock-dkms? e.g. sudo apt autoremove rock-dkms and then reinstall it?

While you are installing it, could you please gather what is printed to the screen and save it / attach it here? I suspect that something is going wrong during the installation but you haven't shown us how your installation process went.

@jlgreathouse I have attempted apt purge rocm-dkms && apt autoremove yesterday and reinstall rocm-dkms after reboot. Even I want to the reinstallation Ubuntu, I'm 15 hours flight away from the machine.. It's not an option.

Attached logs for reinstallation today:

I was solving the same issue, but with Fedora and Fedora kernel.

Turns out, that there is a dependency in amdgpu on amdkfd: when amdgpu loads and amdkfd is not available, then amdgpu will work fine, but amdkfd won't work if you modprobe it later. So check your initramfs, if you have it configured to include amdkfd - in Fedora, it wasn't.

What you should see:

$ dmesg|grep kfd
[ 4.062230] kfd kfd: Initialized module
[ 4.583587] kfd kfd: Allocated 3969056 bytes on gart
[    4.583804] kfd kfd: added device 1002:687f

With this and fixing the permissions on /dev/kfd with the udev rule in README, rocminfo works for me.

I see:

[ 2.131266] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: kfd not supported on this ASIC

@akostadinov which GPU are you trying to use. Since this error code does not tell us what it is

@akostadinov it's probably a bad idea to piggyback tech support requests on an already-closed thread. It's a good way to get your problem ignored. :) This is a common error that is often because of a misconfigured system, so we do not plan on reopening issues like this each time a user sees the problem.

That said, could you show the output of:

  • uname -r
  • dkms status
  • modinfo amdgpu
  • modinfo amdkfd

@jlgreathouse, it just looked like the same issue and followed up on tomkv's comment. But as it appears to be unrelated, I filed a new issue ROCm/ROCK-Kernel-Driver#57 per your advice. Thank you!

I would like to add to this on how I solved my problem since I've been here recently.
Just in case somebody might come across this issue.

Using dmesg |grep kfd I get:

[ 2.458311] kfd kfd: Allocated 3969056 bytes on gart
[    2.458761] kfd kfd: added device 1002:67df

So the kernel driver is loaded but I'm getting error when I do rocminfo

hsa api call failure at line 900, file: /home/jenkins/jenkins-root/workspace/compute-rocm-rel-1.8/rocminfo/rocminfo.cc.

This one fixed my problem (it was actually my fault for using a custom kernel)
I had in my kernel HMM_MIRROR and DRM_AMDGPU_USERPTR both disabled so I recompiled both enabled in my kernel then rebooted. HMM_MIRROR is required to enable DRM_AMDGPU_USERPTR

Not sure if this one is required but I have specifically set GEN3 for PCIE in my BIOS/UEFI.
Hope it helps.

I'm using kernel v5.3.7 btw

Same issue on kernel v5.0.0-23 using rx5700xt
