The ROLE Project, supported by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme, aims to build a framework that allows a learner to construct and maintain her own Personal Learning Environment (PLE). ROLE offers adaptivity and personalization in terms of content and navigation and the entire learning environment and its functionalities. The ROLE infrastructure will empower the learner for true lifelong learning across institutional boundaries. This Wiki is mainly dedicated to Open Source developers with the intention to use or extend software components created in the context of ROLE.

General Information

ROLE’s cross- disciplinary innovations will deliver and test prototypes of high responsive TEL environments, offering breakthrough levels of effectiveness, flexibility, user-control and mass-individualisation. The work of ROLE will advance the state-of-the-art in human resource management; self-regulated and social learning; psycho-pedagogical theories of adaptive education and educational psychology; service composition and orchestration; and the use of ICT in lifelong learning.

ROLE offers adaptivity and personalization in terms of content and navigation and the entire learning environment and its functionalities. This approach permits individualization of the components, tools, and functionalities of a learning environment, and their adjustment or replacement by existing web-based software tools. Learning environment elements can be combined to generate (to mashup) new components and functionalities, which can be adapted by lone learners or collaborating learners to meet their own needs and to enhance the effectiveness of their learning. This empowers each user to generate new tools and functions according to their needs, and can help them to establish a livelier and personally more meaningful learning context and learning experience.

ROLE’s generic framework uses an open source approach, interoperable across software systems and technology. Hence any tool created by an individual is available from a pool of services and tools to all learners via the internet, no matter which learning environment, operating system, or device they use, and which subject matter they learn.

Respective activities have been defined to bring the results of ROLE to the targeted international markets in higher education and corporate training. Thus, significant benefits arise for the learners, their communities, employer, TEL developers and society.

16 internationally renown research groups and companies cover all required pedagogical and technical competencies. ROLE is a collaborative project budgeted with 8.5 million Euro and funded under the IST 7th Frameworkprogramme of the European Commission.

Objectives

ROLE covers five main objectives: to support the individual assembly of accessible learning services, tools and resources in responsive open learning environments (ROLE)

  • to support the individual assembly of accessible learning services, tools and resources in responsive open learning environments (ROLE)
  • to research and develop a psycho-pedagogically sound framework for supporting
  • the individual composition of learning services in ROLE
  • to create new engineering methodologies to enable significant contributions to ROLE from learner and developer communities from outside the project consortium
  • to develop and sustain an evaluation methodology to systematically demonstrate the effectiveness of different ROLE in test-beds focused on the transition of learners
  • to exploit and disseminate the ROLE results to wider communities and markets

In ROLE we distinguish between the enabling ROLE infrastructure, the ROLE resources, services, and tools and the user perspective (including learners as well as teachers). ROLE will create an individual world for learning with personalization intelligence on the user’s side. ROLE will reach this objective by enabling the user to easily construct and maintain her own personal learning environment (PLE) consisting of a mix of preferred learning tools, learning services, learning resources and other related technologies.

ROLE will therefore deliver adaptivity on the level of responses based on learner behaviour and place the actual orchestration (adaptation) of the suggested tools and services under learner control.

ROLE’s expected result

For the learner and teacher, the ROLE infrastructure enables for the first time a truly learner-centred PLE. The ROLE infrastructure will empower the user for true lifelong learning across institutional boundaries. The integration of learning with other parts of the learner’s social life will be considerably facilitated, thus increasing motivation for and effectiveness of learning. The ROLE learning services and tools will create new opportunities for collaborative learning and learning communities as well for emerging markets.

The ROLE Alliance Program

The ROLE Alliance Program gives you the opportunity to become a part of the ROLE Project.

What is the Alliance Program?

The ROLE Alliance Program forms a partner network of strategic users, vendors and other stakeholders in order to extend the use, deployment and further development of the project’s results. The program aims to create synergies between the ROLE Project and you as an external stakeholder. If you want to contribute your ideas and solutions on how personal learning environments can be used to improve efficiency and effectiveness of life-long learning approaches, please cooperate with us by joining the ROLE Alliance Program.

As a member of Alliance Program, you have benefits like early access to the project documentation and scenario descriptions, as well as support in using and further developing the ROLE software. You will gain extended rights in using the ROLE Showcase Platform, like author rights in contributing content and extended features in some of the software demonstrators. You will also have a possibility to visit specific ROLE workshops for free and to get in contact with members of the ROLE Consortium. An annual Alliance Partner Meeting will be organized in combination with workshops, conferences or other events with the topic of PLE.

Are you a software developer?

The ROLE project is addressed to the open source community who can develop and provide own tools, services and resources within the ROLE framework. As a software developer you may:

  • Develop and provide own tools, services and resources within ROLE framework
  • Distribute your software through the ROLE Widget Store
  • Get author rights on the Showcase Platform
  • Use ROLE SDK, source codes and developer documentation
  • Participate on developer workshops (Developer Camps)
  • Participate on developer competitions (Widget Enchantments)
  • Get direct contact to and support from the ROLE Partners

If you want to contribute your ideas and learning sofware to the ROLE Project, you are welcome to register here for free!
