Missing menu in the intro

If I press escape during the opening crawl or the valkyrie flight sequence, the crawl or the game stops, but the menu doesn't appear. All I can do is press escape again to close the non-existent menu and continue. Among other things, it means I can't use the "skip intro" menu entry.
