ReLand Project

Resurfacing Landscapes: Mosul Dam Archaeological Project. A joint project of University of Palermo and Duhok Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage.

Project Description

The ReLand project was born in January 2023 from the cooperation between the University of Palermo and the General Directorate of Antiquities of Duhok (Kurdistan Region of Iraq - KRG), with the aim of contributing to the development of a comprehensive research programme to assess the effects of water level fluctuations in the Mosul Dam basin on the archaeological heritage of the upper Tigris region of Iraq, a region with over 275 archaeological sites of extreme interest.

Through a combination of compilative and bibliographical studies, remote analysis and field interventions using state-of-the-art technology, the project aims to rapidly identify the most endangered sites, assess their state of conservation, proceed with targeted rescue interventions, and define and field-test a 'best practice', i.e. a protocol of monitoring and preservation techniques, methods and procedures to support the planning of further intervention strategies by local antiquities departments
