After twiddling with v1.1.2 for a bit, I realized that to get all the features working (any display, encoder, wired support), I needed to incorporate some kind of shift register. Thus, new versions of the PCBs are now available using a 74HC595A SOIC-16 shift register.

Do mind that if you have the original PCB and want to pair it with the new ones, they aren't compatible unless you plan on abandoning the display. Same goes for the firmware... going to check that out soon. Despite that, if you only desire minimal complexity of components and firmware without the shift register (aka you have a Pro Micro, Elite C, etc.), the original works just fine.
