Arduino Animatronic Eyes

A computer science project I've build with a friend of mine. It's a pair of eyes which follow you when you walk past it.

The original code is (mostly) copied from github.com/Nimrod-Galor/eye-animatronics

We decided to put the eyes in a box behind a picture of Mark Zuckerberg. This way it looks like he's always watching you (as his eyes will follow you when you walk past him).

Material list

  • The 3d printed files (see below)
  • The laser cut files (see below) (if you only want the eyes and not the box, you can skip this)
  • Arduino UNO
  • 5x 9g servo
  • ADNS 3080
  • Jumper cables
  • Optionally: IR LED's (+ matching resistors) for better visibility

Tools list

  • 3D printer => for the frame, eyeballs, eyelids and u-joints
  • Laser cutter => for the box
  • Soldering iron => to solder the jumper cables together

3D printed files

We've combined two thingiverse projects, Doorman with eye holder & eyeball improvements and The Doorman - Eyeball with ball joint. The frame, eyeball and u-joint are from the first project. The eyelid is from the second one.

The eyes in the first design have a better connection with the frame (u-joint vs ball-joint). However, that design doesn't include the eyelid. The eyelid from the second design is compatible with the first design, so we just took it from there.

All files we used can be found in the 3d-files directory. Remember that you need 2 eyeballs, 2 eyelids (you should scale them up a bit yourself) and 2 u-joints if you want to build this yourself.

Laser cut files

We've laser cut the box.svg and front_box.svg from the laser-files directory. The dimensions of the box are the following: height: 47cm, width: 36cm.

The foam board we orded online with the dimensions of 34cm x 43cm and the file zuck.webp printed on it.

We hot glued the foam board to the back of the front panel, and hot glued the front panel to the sides. To mount the eyes we placed a small plate inside the box and glued everything together.

Capturing frames from the camera

You can use github.com/RCmags/ADNS3080_frame_capture to capture frames from the ADNS 3080. It requires you to first flash the arduino_serial_output.ino to the arduino and then run the python script. Make sure to set the correct serial port in the python script.
