For compatibility reasons the 3D print colorizer system is primarily designed for Sharpie markers.
When printing the right pen holder you can also use cheaper Shuttle Art or Amazon Basics Markers. Unfortunately they seem to be unavailable in the US right now. You can also try other Sharpie-like markers.
For printing a transparent or better translucent filament is recommended. This is needed so you can see the painted colors through the filament. You don´t need to spend a lot of money here. The pricier filaments are generally more clear but this is not what we are looking for. Translucent or milky filaments work best. After trying out different vendors the Amazon Basics PLA gave the best results for me.
