NVM use version does not support installing the packages used

Issue summary

While using Node 10.15.0 (npm 6.4.x), while installing, error message is given:
Invalid dependency type requested: alias

Aliases are not supported until npm 6.9.x.

Upgrading to node 12.13.0 does the trick.

Expected behavior

Should be able to install.

Actual behavior

While using Node 10.15.0 (npm 6.4.x), while installing, error message is given:
Invalid dependency type requested: alias

Steps to reproduce the problem

1. Pull down repo
2. nvm use
3. npm i

Reduced test case

No way to enforce npm 6.4 in a test case.
