That’s a shame, as ever… I’m going to brainstorm about a new name tonight. Do you have any particular expectation? Like, must SMS and/or something about “secure” appear in the name, or should it even be related to what it does, or you don’t care? |
@ArchangeGabriel We would avoid to include SMS in the name, because we may add XMPP transport soon. |
@BastienLQ So… TextSecure? :p What about the secure side? Should be in or not? |
Langis. There are currently no registered trademarks for "Langis" (I refer to the Nice class 9, which includes software). langis.io is available (Langis = signaL, backwards) |
What about NextSecure? No TM apparently, all three domains available, and this would be the NextSecure App (NSA). |
Stupid lawyers trying to get their bonus. :-( So that is what takes it so long to release. BTW, adding messaging over xmpp (encrypted I assume) would bring the functionality back to that of TextSecure 2.6.4, but with more servers available so it would not be as easy to block. Anyway, all combinations with "Text", "Chat", "Crypto" and "Secure" seem to be already taken. Perhaps a completely different name would be better than. I'll try to think of something. |
"LockedText" ? |
'Gibberish' is how i privately publish beta versions of my featurebranches of this project:) |
TextCipher is all green too (there was a CIPHERTEXT trademark, but it has been cancelled 7 years ago). |
@vdveer Not bad! I like it. |
@BastienLQ However, it has only .im available (though both other domain names have no websites). |
But I like the name too, you can easily explain why this name (just look at my desktop notification of ciphered SMS :p), and all TM with that name are expired/ended. |
'gibberish' is great!! make it quick so that someone doesn't steal it. @BastienLQ by XMPP do you mean OMEMO? i think that maybe you should avoid unencrypted chats and make encryption mandatory. othervise too many mistakes possible. would you consider Cryptocat integration (it's XMPP + OMEMO)? the new desktop client is amazing and it only needs a mobile client. |
I could propose name DarkSMS - it's name of my app with similar functionality (also available in GitHub). I can donate this name to your project. Though DarkSMS was developed independently I'm sure a lot of techniques and algorithms could be shared. |
How about ConvoSecure? |
"Silence" is available. Short, punchy, .im available, no trademark registered and AFAIK no company/app with this name. |
Silence is good (albeit less descriptive). Also, although domains are registered, .org and .io websites do not exist, so less possible confusion. Maybe Silence is more simple than Gibberish, so better for wide spreading. |
there is an app: |
@p4nci This app seems not to be maintained, is not a SMS/MMS app and do not have a lot of users. So it won't be a problem. |
@BastienLQ |
It’s not even an app, it’s only a widget, and Android has better built-in support for those things now. So go for it! |
@pR0Ps as SMSSecure member, what do you think about "Silence", |
One thing that wasn’t taken into account: GitHub name changes (Organization, Repo). There is an user named silence (https://github.com/silence), and an organization called Gibberish (https://github.com/Gibberish). So both aren’t available for this purpose. |
@ArchangeGabriel We will probably add IM at the end of the name if not available. Same for Twitter account and IRC chan. |
@BastienLQ OK, makes sense. |
I like Silence and related names. SilentSMS (favorite), SilentText, SilentIM, SilentMessenger, etc |
@pR0Ps SilentSMS is probably not god idea, at least in Germany: Also, a Phil Zimmermann's messenger "Silent circle" could be a problem(???) |
@p4nci Silent circle is not a registered trademark and names are quite different IMO. |

silent.im is not available. Neither are secure.im, crypt(o).im. I would say, go for silence.im before it’s taken too. ;) |
Add a notification with the new brand name.

silence.im is registered, waiting for Freenode staff to register #Silence. |
@BastienLQ you said "We will probably add IM at the end of the name if not available". Twitter has already #silence. I think #SilenceIM, like for github (https://github.com/SilenceIM/), will be better and more consistent. |
You still need to update Organization and Repo web address (currently pointing to smssecure.org). You might want to redirect SMSSecure to SilenceIM, or add a notice with a link. |
@ArchangeGabriel I'm setting up the server right now. ;-) |
Random drive-by comment from a user who had no idea this was happening, great job on the rebranding - smooth as silk, got the update overnight with the popup explaining the name change; very well done team. 👍 |
More (in-app) info on the name change would have been appreciated – I had to google for it now, thinking the app got bought by someone (and that I was going to have to look into finding an alternative!). |
CellTrust is currently trying to ban SMSSecure from app stores. The company claims that SMSSecure creates a confusion with their trademark SecureSMS.
We don't want to fight against fools and we will change the name of the app. This PR shows a notification to the user to focus on the new name.
Suggestions for the new name are opened and you can comment on this PR to make proposals. We have to find it very quickly as SMSSecure is not available on the Amazon App Store and on the US Play Store anymore.
The new name must not be a registered trademark (a directory of trademarks is available online) and its domain name should be available (at least .org and/or .im and/or .io).
