Can't choose secondary phone numbers or email addresses

The AOSP contacts app, when invoked by other apps to choose a contact for an email address or phone number, shows one selectable row for each address or number (that is, a contact will appear multiple times, one for each entry within their contact record).

Simple Contacts only lists the contacts themselves, and appears to default to the first address or number, with no way of choosing a secondary one. This is particularly inconvenient when entries are not in any sorted order, as this means old contact details for a lot of my contacts become the default here.
