Magic Staffs

Magic Staffs are a tool/weapon added to the game that allows tribes that can't normally use unicorn magic to cast spells. Unlike the magic spells and capabilities available to unicorns, the magic staffs are a lot more limited in their usefulness.

They only work with certain types of spells, do not have the ability to customise the traits contained in those spells (see Usage), and come with a set number of charges before they have to be refilled.

Obtaining

Magic staffs can be crafted from a gemstone of any kind. The ones most non-spell-casting tribes will be able to obtain is the blank staff, though, crafted with a regular unenchanted gemstone.

Usage

Finding Spells

There are two ways to find spells to use with a magic staff. The first is the obvious one: Use a gemstone already enchanted with a spell to create your staff.

The second one is you can "borrow" one. A blank staff can be use on players and many of the mobs in the game to collect magic from them.

  1. Players Stealing spells from players will grab whatever is in their primary spell slot, allowing you to use it against them.
  2. Mobs The type of spell you get will depend on the type of mob you find. See the handy table below for which mobs give you which spells.

Casting

To use a magic staff, you start by equipping it in your main hand and holding right-click to power up a shot. They function like bows, and upon releasing the mouse button, if you have powered them for long enough, the staff will cast its loaded spell whilst consuming one of its charges.

A fully-charged staff has a maximum of 3 charges before you have to refill it.

Note

It is possible to overcharge a staff by holding right-click for too long. It will begin to overload when it starts producing smoke and if you continue to charge it beyond that point, the staff may go off unexpectedly, dealing damage to the player.

Spell Effects

When cast through a magic staff, most of the spells will function as if they were fired by a unicorn using their "Magic Missile" ability. Some exceptions exist, though.
