When you open both links you'll see an HTML page with the screenshot. Github is clever enough to resolve the url to get the actual image. A normal Markdown parser, i.e. Hugo's, will not do that. Hence the image looks broken.

With an absolute url to get the actual image I meant something like this: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/lucperkins/hugo-fresh/master/images/screenshot.png
