Hello everyone,

this is V0.9 for the NO_FRAME version.
Starting from this version I've decided to open 2 new branches, since this main one was designed with a risen frame, in order to fill the top with a 3mm "finishing layer" ( in my case a self healing cutting mat).
The new branches provides variations on the top finishing and they will definitely gather more appeal from the general public.

This 0.9 version mainly concerns some rework around the bracket's joints and the files nesting (how the pieces fit inside the plywood sheets )

Next, I'll be attempting to make the design as light (less pieces, lower costs) as possible, so I'll be experimenting with lighter legs/brackets, obviously, without sacrificing stability : )

StudioGib_Mill_table_v08_frameless

Hello everyone,
time for a new update.

Assembling the first prototype was great, it gave me new and overall it went better than expected; I've redesigned few pieces in order to address the problems met, working toward publishing the V1.0 release. I would have liked to jump straight to the V 1.0 but I'd like to test the updates of this version before committing to a proper release.

Mainly I've opted for taking out excess weight thus making the project both lighter and cheaper. Now the pieces fit into 2 plywood sheets insted of the previous 3. Moreover I've reworked the leg to bracket connection aiming to increase the torsional rigidity of the tabletop.
And I'm attaching the first version of the Assembly manual.

001_MillTable_StudioGIB_V07

Hello, time for a new release.

I've finally built the first prototype based on V.06 of the drawings, so this new release will be mainly solving few issues I have found while building the table; here next a few considerations:

  • The pieces arrived lightly splintered on the lower face. It didn't compromise the overall quality of the job but still it's no good. That's because the Cnc manufacturer chosen for the job didn't use a spoil board but the sheets were milled over vacuum suckers. It's really really important to ask the manufacturer to use a spoil board instead.

  • There were no other bad surprises but the tolerances between the joints were a little too small, it's not a big issue if you are down to a little sanding but the idea behind this project is to allow anyone to be able to build one without power tools or any special skills beside the use of glue and an hammer and maybe a few clamps.

  • I've reworked the legs' design to increase the stiffness of the table. The connection surface was not strong enough and it allowed a little movement on the table plane. It's not big but still noticeable and a little uncomfortable.

  • I've added 4 new connections between the tabletop and the brackets, this to counter the deformations of a "living" material and to ensure the table top to stay flat.

  • The cost to make and deliver V0.6 amounted to 750€ (E.U.) There's a 20% volatility in cost due to the war, and the general rise of wood price started last summer. Due to main source of birch in our economy comes from Russia, the prices are never been so high. This is quite depressing considering that the values behind this project are about ecology in local sourcing of the materials and local manufacturing.
    I'll try with the next release to redesign few pieces in order to make it as cheap as possible.

What's next:

While the table already works, V0.8 will be the first "official" release, as such there will be a few changes and improvements to the design :

  • V0.8 will present the choice to build a "frameless" and lighter version, on top of the one already existing. Cutting off the frame should allow a leaner profile, cheaper milling and speedier assembly.

  • V0.7 I'll try to rework the leg-beam joint in order to cut out the tightening bolts from the design and have a 100% bolts and screws free table.

  • I want to rework few pieces in order to fit them in a smaller number of sheets and make the overall process cheaper.

Hello Again!

Short update on the project:
Most of the joints have been reworked and the central beam is now leaner by 5 cm (height), now we're finally ready to get a quotation for the milling and start to build the prototype.

Once built (and tested)we will release the first version of the assembly manual.

Past issues solved in this release :

  • The outer frame angle joint ( A in the picture ) has been reworked and now it's both easier to assemble and cheaper.

  • After a short consideration we decided to keep the pieces fit to 3 plywood sheets to increase the compatibility of the schemes to the most common sizes available on the market.
  • The proportions have been reworked and now the overall design is leaner and lighter. We are trying to "carve out" as much material as possible.

Notable issues still to be tested/solved :

  • dowels : few pieces ( LEGS) sport the holes for inserting connecting dowels on their outer side. It's ugly but it was the cheapest way to fix the leg together without working on a two side milling.
  • legs-to bracket : this connection will be thoroughly tested on the prototype; realistically we'll go toward designing a single leg+bracket piece in stead to the current two; The piece should end up being stronger and simpler.

V6_ISSUES

We are still working on the walkable demo, we hope to release it in a couple of weeks!

GIB-Mill_Table_04

Hello there!
First release of the project.
This is to be intended as a test release, as we get comfortable with the platform and the process of publishing here.

This file will be used to start the prototype phase, in which we will polish the design and stress-test the joints.
As soon as the table will enter in the next phase, we will attach proper instructions and an assembly manual to the release.

Notable issues to be tested/solved :

  • The outer frame angle joint is notably too complex; it's the only piece currently requiring a two side milling, slowing down the process and rising up the costs (and the chances of errors in the mill)
  • As it is now, the design requires 3 1220x2440cm plywood sheets, we want to save space (and money) and slim it down to 2
  • The overall proportions of the main beam are not satisfying yet, we're trying to make it leaner
  • The testing will probably change the leg to bracket joint, this will probably need to be redesigned.

I will try adding to the release a workable 3d model or at least an unreal engine walkable demo.
